The listening environment of the audio room largely determines the sound quality of the audio. No matter how good the hardware is, it is difficult to have a good effect if the listening environment is poor, but this is often overlooked. The acoustic characteristics of a room are largely related to the interior decoration and room layout. The shape and size of an ideal listening room should be in accordance with the golden ratio, and the three dimensions (length, width, height) are not integer multiples, so that the influence of standing waves in the room is reduced and the sense of hearing is improved. Secondly, sound insulation is required to prevent interference inside and outside the room, and to diffuse sound. There must also be appropriate sound absorption to prevent repeated reflection of sound waves, which will stimulate sound interference of certain natural frequencies (normal frequencies), resulting in sound coloration.
Each sound space will have its own sound characteristics; each sound space will also have its own unique sound characteristics due to different space sizes, proportions, and interior decoration. In other words, it's rare that two sound spaces will sound the same. Therefore, even if the exact same audio equipment is used, as long as the audio space is different, different sound characteristics will be produced.
The "reverberation" of room acoustics
The sound from the sound source in the room reaches the listener's ears through six paths: the direct sound from the speakers, the reflected sound from the floor, the reflected sound from the ceiling, the reflected sound from the back wall of the speaker, and the sound from the side walls. Reflected sound, reflected from the wall behind the listener. As long as any reflection condition of the sound wave is changed, the sound will change. It can be seen that sound waves are like light waves that reflect light to a mirror. The walls, floors, and ceilings of houses will reflect sound. Unfortunately, sound waves cannot be seen, and this phenomenon is often ignored. Sounds emitted from one place in the house will travel in the form of waves and reach the listening position through countless paths. Due to the existence of reflections, at the listening position, what we actually hear is not purely the sound from the speakers. It is the direct sound of the horn, and the effect of the superposition of each reflected sound. So, what is the effect of this superposition? The concept of "reverberation time" is more commonly used and important. It refers to the time process in which the energy of the sound wave is gradually reduced in the continuous reflection after the direct sound. The application of the word "mixed" here is very vivid, because the sound heard somewhere in the room is not always single, but chaotic from all directions. The reflected sound is usually referred to as the reverberation sound.
In fact, reverberation (reverberation, also known as reverberation) refers to the phenomenon that the sound formed by repeated reflections from walls, ceilings, floors, furniture and people in a room persists and gradually decays. It is different from echo, which is not a smooth decay, but a sudden return of sound. For the most important indicator of room acoustics, the first is the reverberation time, which is the time it takes for the sound energy to decay to one millionth (60db) of the original intensity. For a determined room, the reverberation time mainly depends on for sound absorption. For the reverberation time of the Hi-Fi listening room, it can be 0.4~0.5 seconds. Moderate reverberation time can make the music fuller and the voice fuller. The reverberation time is longer and the sound is more lively and rich. However, when the reverberation time is too long, the sound is easy to be ambiguous, the speech intelligibility decreases, the music lacks strength and rhythm, and the reverberation time is too short. , the sound is dry and hard, lack of vitality, and the sound without reverberation (such as outdoor) is often dull, so it is necessary for a sound room to have proper reverberation.
